Thinking Ahead: Rosh Hashanah 2018

It’s late July, which means summer is well and truly under way. In fact, it’s so far under way that it’s only about seven weeks until Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year! It’s easy to forget about the real world when the sun is out, but we don’t want you to forget that one of the biggest Jewish holidays is right around the corner.

Honey

Honey is a mainstay of Rosh Hashanah: we use it to sweeten cakes and dip pieces of challah and apple into it to symbolise the sweet new year we want. If you’re travelling this summer, keep an eye out for local, regional honeys you can bring home. It’s a gorgeous way to add a special touch to your New Year table!

Apples

As summer winds down, local apples will start appearing in local farmers’ markets. Believe it or not, there are more varieties than just “red” and “green”! Keep an eye out for delicious homegrown apples as they come into season: it’s a great way to support local farmers and small businesses while making your table taste great.

Gifts

The Jewish New Year is a time spent with family and friends. If you’re going to be spending meals at the homes of your loved ones, make sure you’re stocked up on beautiful Rosh Hashanah gifts that they’ll love! Whether you choose a handmade honey dish, a gorgeous bottle of Israeli olive oil, or something else entirely, you can’t go wrong with New Year gifts from Israel!
