How Israelis Celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut

Celebrations for Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, start the night before, as per the Jewish calendar. It falls out on the evening of April 30th until sundown on May 1st, immediately following Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, which takes place on the evening of April 29th until sundown on April 30th.

Yom Ha’atzmaut isn’t just a date on the calendar—it’s a full-on celebration of freedom, identity, and national pride. In Israel, this day bursts to life with color, music, and community spirit, turning the entire country into a giant birthday party. From official state ceremonies to all-night street festivals, Israelis mark their Independence Day with deep emotion and joyful tradition.

Getting the Party Started

The evening of Yom Ha'atzmaut starts off with the official ceremony on Mount Herzl, in which the flag is brought from half-mast to full post as the switch between Memorial Day and Independence Day commences.

Immediately afterwards, the event becomes joyous as Independence Day officially starts: There is a torch lighting ceremony in which twelve torches are lit, and the number twelve symbolizes the number of the tribes of Israel. Each year, twelve different people are given the honor to light them, and afterwards, there are flag-bearer drilling exercises in which there are representatives from each unit in the army, navy, air force, the police department, and the firefighter department. The event is aired live throughout the entire country, and marks the official beginning of the holiday.

All around Israel, the government and the different municipalities all over the country plan free parties and events for their residents. They invite Israeli singers and musicians to perform, and they have various informal street performances. These parties go on all throughout the night, and the bigger cities, such as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, have multiple shows going on at the same times in different places, and many people come to the cities to celebrate.

Daytime Activities

Yom Ha’atzmaut is considered a national holiday, and so most people don’t work. Stores close early or don’t open at all, and public transportation is free, making it easy and accessible for Israelis to travel around the country.

There is an annual aerial flyover demonstration by the Air Force - where different planes and jets fly over various cities in Israel - which has taken place practically every year since the end of the Independence Day war in 1949. It is exciting to follow the flight path of the planes and to watch them fly over the cities.

Most Israelis celebrate by going on hikes around the country to connect to the land, whether up north, down south, or near home. Many people also have picnics or barbecues, or do both. It is a day of family, friends, and celebrating the country.

Winding Down

The day ends with the Israel Prize ceremony, one of the country's most prestigious honors, awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Israeli society in different fields, such as science, culture, education, and the arts.

It’s a moving tribute that reflects the values and achievements of the state, and it serves as a meaningful close to a day filled with pride and celebration. Broadcast live, the ceremony reminds Israelis of the incredible talent and dedication that continues to shape the nation’s future.
