The evening of Yom Ha'atzmaut starts off with the official ceremony on Mount Herzl, in which the flag is brought from half-mast to full post as the switch between Memorial Day and Independence Day commences.

Immediately afterwards, the event becomes joyous as Independence Day officially starts: There is a torch lighting ceremony in which twelve torches are lit, and the number twelve symbolizes the number of the tribes of Israel. Each year, twelve different people are given the honor to light them, and afterwards, there are flag-bearer drilling exercises in which there are representatives from each unit in the army, navy, air force, the police department, and the firefighter department. The event is aired live throughout the entire country, and marks the official beginning of the holiday.
All around Israel, the government and the different municipalities all over the country plan free parties and events for their residents. They invite Israeli singers and musicians to perform, and they have various informal street performances. These parties go on all throughout the night, and the bigger cities, such as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, have multiple shows going on at the same times in different places, and many people come to the cities to celebrate.
